openMDWS and EWD For VistA Developers

openMDWS is Rob Tweed’s new all-encompassing strategy for
opening up access to VistA.  It embraces and extends the VA’s Medical
Domain Web Services strategy, casting it as an Open architecture and
widening its focus beyond XML-based web services.

EWD is Rob’s rapid web development framework which has
become the de-facto technology for modernising VistA’s UI and allowing
to be accessible from desktop browsers and mobile devices.  EWD
underpins openMDWS and together they represent a potent and
exceptionally productive platform for the VistA developer.

This course is designed for all VistA developers who wish to learn about EWD and openMDWS.

The course will assume no prior knowledge of EWD,
openMDWS, MDWS or of web application development.  By the end of the 3
day course, all students should be capable of building openMDWS services
and creating desktop and mobile web front-ends for VistA.

The course will start by examining in detail how web
applications and web services work and the many critical issues faced by
web and mobile application developers that are addressed and automated
by EWD.

It will then focus on how EWD works, its design principles
and philosophy, before focusing on how it simplifies the use of the
very latest breed of Javascript frameworks, in particular ExtJS and
Sencha Touch.  It will also look at MDWS and its metamorphosis into the
openMDWS architecture.

The next step will be to demonstrate how to design and
build openMDWS services on top of VistA, and then examine how EWD can be
used in conjunction with openMDWS.

Along the way, students will participate in hand-on
exercises.  To this end, all students should come prepared with a laptop
and have an installed and running version of the dEWDrop Virtual
Machine (http://www.fourthwatchsoftware.com).  Important Note: there will *not* be time during the course to help with its download and installation.
