Use of icons in the representation of pathology recommended

Dr. David Eibling, Otolaryngology, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and Dr. Augie Turano, Heathcare Informatics Solution Architect, VA Pittsburgh, recommended at the First WorldVistA Education Conference, being held at Robert Morris University (RMU), the use of icons and timelines in Electronic Medical Records such as the Veterans Affairs VistA to represent the course of pathology for patients.  Dr.'s Eibling and Turano demonstrated the software using VistA data at the conference. They found that describing disease processes purely in text to communicate disease states was not as effective as visualization. Adapting the methods used to present critical information changes the information load on the care providers and magnifies their effectiveness. They called for advanced standards in “graphical idioms” for medical care.
